WORK IN PROCESS is an exhibit of “work in progress” and “rough process” comics art being shown alongside Comicstreet 2026 at the SLQ Edge. If you’ve always wanted to see the original rough pencil art that came before the finished pages, the original inkwork still plastered over with sticky note corrections, or how the colour layers look separated from the rest – this exhibition is very much for you!

Even the Comicstreet poster illustration goes through many WIP stages each year! Art by Mamath

Be Part of the Exhibit!

Are you a comics artist with nitty gritty comics process art to show the world? We want to hear from you! Apply to be part of the WORK IN PROCESS exhibit via the form below. Submissions will remain open until August 1st.

We are interested in process art from completed comics, as well as WIP art of things you are actively working on! Get attendees interested in your art as more than just a finished product.

We are accepting applications from all comic artists in Australia, not only Comicstreet 2026 tabling artists. Interstate physical submissions will have to express post their art to a Comicstreet committee member, so please keep this additional cost in mind if applying from interstate. Comicstreet will cover return shipping in this case.

Submission Content

This is a fairly experimental exhibition! We are accepting several types of submission as follows:

Original Artwork:

Send us your original work with all the mistakes and messiness intact! These might be rough pencils, inks, even a fully painted cover illustration. Perhaps you paint individual panels that get assembled digitally?

These works will be framed and hung along side a small print out of what the final comic page looks like (if applicable) and an artist blurb. Physical submissions such as these must be delivered to a Comicstreet committee member by August 15th.

Multi-page Submission:

Send us multiple pages showing a comic page in different stages of completion. For example, you may have files for pencils and inks. These will be matted and framed side-by-side, alongside a print-out of the final page if provided.

This could be a digital or physical submission. Digital submissions will be printed and hung by Comicstreet. Physical submissions will have to be delivered to a Comicstreet committee member by August 15th.

Dissected Page:

Send us a digital file, organised into a few layers, of a single comic page. For example, the rough pencils, clean pencils, inks, text – Or some other arrangement that makes sense for your workflow. We will print these layers on transparencies to be displayed in an interactable flip book.

The final flipbooks will be set up on tables for attendees to engage with as part of the exhibit.

Artists may make multiple submissions to the exhibition, however we will likely only select one entry per artist.

As with the rest of Comicstreet, no generative AI, fan art or ultra-violent/sexual content will be accepted. Please choose your submission with this in mind.
